Abdul leads Luminate’s funding activities in Africa. He brings more than 20 years’ experience in consulting and leading successful civic engagement programmes across Africa, through grant-making, comprehensive support, and advocacy.
Prior to joining Luminate, Abdul was Executive Director for the Kenya Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya). During his time at ICJ Kenya, he provided strategic direction, restructured programmes and budgets, upgraded the financial structures and organisational policies, and revamped ICJ Kenya’s profile and brand.
Abdul was previously a Program Officer for the Democratic Governance and Rule of Law Program at the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA). In this role he directed and managed grant-making and advocacy on international justice, security governance, and protection of human rights defenders at risk.
Prior to his appointment at OSIEA, Abdul worked at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) where he headed the Redress and Legal Department for five years.
