Talk To Me Direct Podcast: Conversations about Africa’s vibrant civic space

By Audrey Kawire Wabwire

Civil society organisations continue to play a crucial role as champions of innovation and progress in Africa. Their efforts span various domains, including advocating for good digital governance and tech platform accountability, fostering youth engagement in Nigeria's leadership, and promoting women's participation in democratic processes

Honouring this work, Luminate is proud to present a series of eight African changemakers who inspire, lead, and innovate in this ecosystem in our new podcast series, Talk To Me Direct.

Africa’s vibrant civic space – and the organisations and individuals at the heart of it – have long held the line and pushed for positive social change across the continent. The physical and online spaces where people come together to exercise their rights in shaping our societies continue to thrive, despite immense pushback. The civic space, on and offline, is especially important because it provides everyone with an opportunity to contribute to a thriving, inclusive society.

We invited changemakers from across the civic space – including current and former politicians, policymakers, activists, and a filmmaker – to discuss the challenges facing countries across Africa, how we address these, and the positive changes already underway.

A throughline emerges in these discussions: People’s active participation in society today is increasingly impacted and shaped by technology. More and more, Africans are gaining ground in advocating for human-centred technologies that serve and protect their needs, and are at the centre of the global conversation around ethics and governance. How can we ensure that the products developed by Big Tech – including the emerging AI companies – and social media platforms centre the rights, safety, and integrity of Africans?

Natasha Kimani, a governance and public policy expert, hosts Amina Salihu, Polly Wachira, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Judy Kibinge, Irene Mwendwa, Chinenye Uwanaka, Lindiwe Mazibuko, and Luminate’s Africa Vice President Toyin Akinniyi in deep reflections of the civic space in Africa today.
