The Inflection Point International report, published by SembraMedia in partnership with Luminate, is the deepest and broadest research ever done into the state of digital native media in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The report underscores the vital importance of a vibrant new generation of digital native media in strengthening democracy around the world and holding power to account.
The report, which is based on interviews with 201 independent media organisations across Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, shows that digital media entrepreneurs are producing ground-breaking journalism, despite often tiny budgets and constant online threats and attacks. In spite of challenging circumstances, these outlets continue to make an impact, ensuring that stories are told and democratic dialogue is protected.
Luminate has long worked to support independent media, an essential component of a healthy democracy. We believe a strong independent media is critical for building stronger societies, and we must come together and honor the work of these journalists with the partnership, funding, and protection necessary for them to continue their work.
The report is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Executive summaries of the report are also available in Thai, Indonesian, Filipino, Malay, Tamil, Vietnamese, Sepedi, Afrikaans, Zulu, Swahili, French, and Hausa.
