Open government: how far has it come and what does the future hold?

To capture the progress made across the global open government movement since the signing of Sweden’s seminal 1766 right to information law, we asked the 200 attendees of Open Up 2016 and our wider network to help us create this graphic timeline.

The contributions highlighted a wide range of major milestones, achievements, and events spanning the past, present, and future of the movement and included hopes and predictions for the future.

Our aim is that this timeline becomes a useful reference tool for anyone interested in open government which will evolve over time.
